It signed "on the air" on June 6, 1947. The late, legendary Bishop R. F. Davis (Greater Highway Churches) purchased WJAY-AM 1280 in the 1980s and operated it as a black gospel music format. During Bishop Davis ownership an FM translator (93.THREE) was purchased to expand the AM signals coverage. In July 2018 Bishop Michael Blue (Door of Hope Christian Church, Marion, South Carolina) purchased WJAY to continue its rich legacy of black gospel music programming.
